Veganism, lifestyle of peace

One more year is coming to an end. And again in western countries there is still this spirit of Christmas, this break when we remember friends and join family as much as possible in the haste of a modern life that seems to suck every second without us even noticing time passing by.

The year that finishes is one of more year of conflicts more than collaborations, economic turmoil more than stability, disagreements more than agreements. May the Christmas spirit contribute to change all of this and let us change course of this big ship carrying humanity through the void of space.  And food may certainly have a word to say in this regard. No matter where a person lives or how old a person is - we all need nourishment.

In many countries and cultures it was normal in the past to offer a snack or complete meal to all visitors, even if they were perfect strangers. Perhaps that was in fact not only a sign of goodwill but a wise strategy, as a satiated body contributes to make people feel well and increase chances of agreements being reached.

And vegan food is the food that nourishes the body causing the minimum suffering to other animals, as well as the least environmental damage. Plus, it is the least common denominator that fits all eaters on a feast.

This time of the year many families meet around the table. Many problems are solved, many new projects start, many new ideas arise, in the atmosphere of relaxation when people talk, socialize and snack together.

Perhaps many more problems could be solved if people gathered more and settled their differences around a table. So let's do it, to build bridges and connections, cementing relationships and creating a healthier and stronger society.

As encouragement, I share this modified recipe of Vareniki. Vareniki is spelled many different ways and there are even more recipe variations than there are spelling variations.  Anyway, this is a recipe that possibly originated in central Asia and spread not only in Asia but Eastern Europe too. Vareniki crossed borders in peace and respect.

The whole process can take a while.  But you can make a generous quantity and freeze before cooking.

Enjoy vareniki, see the recipe!
