Centro Vegetariano is the largest and oldest vegetarian association active in Portugal. It was founded in 2001 by a group of students of the University of Coimbra.
Back in 2001 the information about vegetarianism and veganism in Portuguese was almost non-existent on the Internet. Therefore, the original idea was to create just a website. This website was put online under the domain galaxia-alfa.com, and it soon became widely known in Portugal as a source of information, recipes, and other resources such as a forum, list of restaurants, nutrient calculator and online store.
In 2006 the domain was moved to www.centrovegetariano.org and the association was formally created.
Centro Vegetariano is currently a very well known organization, involving volunteers from several countries and working in partnership with several national and international organizations, such as the International Vegetarian Union, the European Vegetarian Union and EVANA.
Centro Vegetariano took ownership of VEGAN 2050 on January 13, 2009.
